Chapter Seventeen
âSo, now youâre back to knocking?â Peel asked as she threw open the door. She didnât recognize the woman who stood in front of her with a note. âIâve returned to the estate to attend to an unexpected issue. Please join me in my study at 9:30 as this impacts you as well. Sebastien.â She looked at the clock. It was late, already nine oâclock. Peel hoped Anna was back from Mexico City and would be with her when she met with Sebastien.
Peel waited until 9:35 before she decided to leave her room without the usual escort. The door to his study was open and she could hear his voice. He sounded tense, angry. âOjos, I have been trying to reach you for hours.â He paused, then lowered his voice. âI donât want to hear excuses. This is a billion-dollar business. When something comes up, I need to know you are responsive.â
Peel stepped away from the door, conscious of Annaâs warnings. She debated whether she should go back to her room and wait. Deciding that was the best course of action, she turned to walk down the hall, but his next words destroyed her. âI need you to fly here immediately. Anna was shot in Mexico City two hours ago.â A pause. âI donât know. A mugging or an angry lover. They found her near her hotel, dead.â
Peel had been holding her breath, but when she heard that last word, she couldnât help herself. She cried out and sank to the floor, burying her head in her arms. Her ally, her only hope to escape Mexico, was gone.
Gentle hands rubbed her back and a soothing voice spoke to her in Spanish. She looked up at the woman kneeling beside her. It was the same woman who brought her the note earlier. Sebastien stood in front of them, hands behind his back, his face stony. âIâm sorry you heard that,â he said. âI think it would be best if you go to your room now.â He spoke in Spanish to the woman, who nodded repeatedly. Then, with a gentle tug, she pulled Peel to her feet.
She didnât know how she made it to her room. Grief overwhelmed her. Anna was the only hope she had to find Devin. Without her, there would be no newspaper searches, no translator. She couldnât do it on her own. When she thought of the enormity of the task she was facing, she collapsed on the bed. She would not survive this ordeal.
Gradually, her thoughts changed. She realized the depth of her grief was not only about her situation, but also the loss of the beautiful woman who had been kind to her. She thought of Annaâs smile and her expressive dark eyes trying to convey distance but never quite succeeding. She thought about the family Anna left behind and if they would ever know what happened to her. She thought about all her attempts to get Anna to care about her. Peel thought she might have been successful, but what she knew for sure was she was the one who had gotten attached.
